Why wear Braces:
The “Braces Day” concept was created by Sunshine Coast Council Employee Rhonda Oakley whose original idea to organise an ‘in house’ office party for Mayor Bob Abbot’s birthday became more than a celebration and is now a major fundraising initiative for Sunshine Butterflies. The idea was to have all council staff wear Mayor Bob’s signature clothing item: a pair of braces to celebrate this day.
From this original idea, grew an even bigger idea to sell to the Sunshine Coast community so that Bob’s birthday was celebrated and acknowledged throughout the Sunshine Coast.
It was decided that the proceeds of this quirky concept would be donated to the Mayors favourite charity Sunshine Butterflies.
Brightly coloured pairs of funky clothing braces were sold throughout Coles Supermarkets as well as to disability service providers and the general public from the Gold Coast to Harvey Bay.
This concept “Embracing allability– not disability” originating to celebrate the Mayors birthday quickly became a quirky idea to raise funds and awareness for those with a disability.
Braces were purchased in the thousands and were sold and marketed in promo boxes to on sell at retail counters.
Together with SEA FM & Channel 10 (Macquarie Group), promotions were held at Coles Supermarkets & shopping centres throughout the region providing Butterfly Cakes, Face Painting and Raffles to assist this fundraising campaign while also increasing the moral amongst the staff.
The campaign launched by Mayor Bob Abbot and Tennis great – Pat Rafter received TV,Radio & Newspaper Media throughout the region with SEA FM / Macquarie Group as a major driving force promoting the event.
